Discover the History of Sanibel's Award-Winning Casa Ybel Resort
Casa Ybel Resort is an award-winning destination resort that spans 23 acres of lush, manicured lawns and pristine beach overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Designed to provide a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, our Sanibel Island beach resort embodies the casual elegance of our relaxed island setting.
Casa Ybel Resort's illustrious history begins in the mid-1880s, when Reverend George Barnes built Sanibel's first cottage after his boat ran aground on the island's shore. The cottage evolved over the years into a 30-room inn, becoming one of the first Sanibel Island beach resorts. In the 1890s, Barnes' daughter Georgia married a resort guest, and he built her a grand manor on the inn's property as a wedding gift which was named Thistle Lodge. Soon afterwards, celebrities and dignitaries became drawn to its elegance and serenity, and guests such as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford visited the resort to escape mainland pressures.
Today, Casa Ybel Resort continues to delight guests as one of the premier Sanibel Island beach resorts with its timeless setting on the Gulf of Mexico, the gourmet dining at Thistle Lodge, and its luxurious all-suite accommodations. From our Olympic-sized swimming pool and in-suite spa services, guests at our Sanibel Island beach resort will discover thoughtful amenities and gracious hospitality that placed us among Travel + Leisure Magazine's "500 Greatest Hotels in the World."
